First meeting was held in Rezekne, Latvia
The first meeting in Latvia was held from the 10th of December till the 14th of December 2018. The topic for C1 mobility was Waste management. Every mobility will focus on a different topic related to environmental problems that are topical in each hosting country.
The 1st day of C1 mobility was dedicated to the opening ceremony, school and organization presentations, the introduction and presentation of project experts from Turkey on the conceptual framework of the project and application of STEM approach in the project implementation process. All participants voted for the best logo proposals that were submitted before the mobility. On the first day participants were also introduced to the city, its environment, historical places and architectural monuments and buildings. In order to strengthen the project team, to "break the ice" among participants and to interact culturally, there was organized a national evening with national food, songs and dances.
On the 2nd day of the mobility participants and accompanying persons went on a field trip to explore and observe the environmental problems in mobility area, namely Rezekne municipality. Participants were taken to to ALAAS (local leading company in waste management) waste landfill “Križevņiki”. After the field trip participants reflected on their observations and studies. Students created posters, where they depicted the things they have observed and the ideas that might improve the environmental situation and presented them to each other. Meanwhile the coordinators of the project had the meeting to discuss the financial and organizational issues. Second half of the day was dedicated to the trip to Rezekne Academy of Technologies (RTA) that is the founder of Eastern Latvia Technology high school and whose laboratories will be used for practical workshops on the following mobility days. At the end of the day there was organized a practical workshop “Second life of recycled materials”, where students were introduced to 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) strategy and principles by a local eco designer Velga Krukovska. Students were asked to calculate the amount of waste that is produced every year by clothes and fabric manufacturers, and then they analyzed and studied the consequences of the produced waste and the opportunities to reduce or to recycle waste, or to create new things from the old ones. After the designer's presentation participants were asked to work practically and to create new garments from the old pieces of clothes. They created garment patterns and then sewed the created pieces together to make a new and stylish garment that was later presented in the fashion show.
On the 3rd day participants went to some other region of Latvia in order to see, compare and have some other perspective on waste management in Latvia. Participants went on the trip to Valmiera "ZAAO" Ltd. which provides quality waste management services in North Vidzeme region, which includes waste collection, sorting, transportation, processing and disposal in environmentally friendly manner, as well as organizes informative and educational workshops and activities for the public. Participants worked in "URDA" scientific lab, where they did experiments with materials and substances, as well as they visited nature path, where they could observe science in nature, measure trees and study the processes in the forest.
On the 4th day participants reflected on the observed and studied material. They worked in mixed teams on power point presentations. They had to create projects that might be implemented by themselves when returning home. The basic idea of all projects was to work out the idea and solutions on how to make the environment more friendly by applying 3R principle. Participants were given instructions how to create the project and what information and calculations are required and how to apply STEM approach in the project. Participants presented their projects to all partners.
The second part of the day was dedicated to Chemistry and Physics workshops in RTA, where students did experiments on the acquisition of oxygen, as well as generated ideas on how to use the heat and electricity produced by waste management company "Getliņi", as well as played Kahoot game answering the questions related to waste management and other environmental issues.
On the 5th day participants evaluated mobility content and organization by filling in the prepared online questionnaire and discussed the plans and tasks that need to be done till the next mobility. It was decided that every country will create STEM club and will implement one 3R activity or project which will be presented on C2 mobility in Romania. Participants received certificates on participation in C1 mobility.
